All I can tell you is that my own experience of The Count was very different, but that's saying is that people like different things. Better luck with whatever you play next — and keep up the great work on this site!Mike Taylorhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/06039663158335543317noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6264881409789872629.post-11298209996312860782020-08-04T08:30:10.738-04:002020-08-04T08:30:10.738-04:00I played The Count to completion. Solving the game first consisted of exploring the place (which in itself required a bit of puzzle solving), and then figuring out the game's internal logic, which defies the largely static "rules" that govern Scott Adams adventures just enough to be uncomfortable, but not enough to feel like we transcended anything. And now it feels like there's a very specific sequence of actions you need to perform in order to win, and the slightest deviation, or unlucky timing of randomly scheduled daily events, ultimately locks you out of victory. Adventureland & Pirate Adventure are a lot more lenient in comparison, and even Mission Impossible is to a degree, except for the last few rooms. It also didn't help that I couldn't get saving/loading to work with the copy I found, so I restarted so many times before winning.Ahabhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/04131989140638867919noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6264881409789872629.post-30455118044847814082020-06-20T10:57:36.857-04:002020-06-20T10:57:36.857-04:00Fair enough — your blog, so you gotta play games y...Fair enough — your blog, so you gotta play games you enjoy playing. It's just a shame that your Scott Adams experience ended on (as Jason Dyer said, and I concur) the worst of all of them, and just before arguably the best.Mike Taylorhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/06039663158335543317noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6264881409789872629.post-57255549422948950082020-06-20T09:32:00.135-04:002020-06-20T09:32:00.135-04:00I actually did give both of these a try late last ...I actually did give both of these a try late last year. Voodoo Castle stumped me quickly; so many puzzle rooms, and I just reached a point where I couldn't figure out how to solve any of them or find any new places to go. The Count was more interesting, but I don't think I came close to solving it. I remember being irked by this flagpole early on that you could tie bedsheets to to reach a lower level, but sometimes the post would break, and sometimes it wouldn't, leaving me to wonder if the game expected me to do something to prevent this or if I was just supposed to be lucky. It's conceivable that I might play The Count some day, but if I do, I probably won't make a post about it.Ahabhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/04131989140638867919noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6264881409789872629.post-1734487836697753942020-06-19T20:03:31.913-04:002020-06-19T20:03:31.913-04:00I second the call for Voodoo Castle and particular...I second the call for Voodoo Castle and particularly The Count. The gimmick of the keys and map being missing was a nifty opening (I like how the game just left it to you to make the deduction) but it's definitely not his finest hour.

BTW, Scott Adams came out with a new text adventure last year.

His company has a "traditional" game to go with the Redwall series of books (third person action adventure) and a spinoff "Lost Legends of Redwall" which is a text adventure.

They're planning more and have a Patreon going.Jason Dyerhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/03292199216981320170noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6264881409789872629.post-83121983581270967812019-01-27T19:43:00.035-05:002019-01-27T19:43:00.035-05:00It's too bad you're stopping, the adventur...It's too bad you're stopping, the adventures got significantly better after the first 3. I would recommend #4 Voodoo Castle, #5 The Count, and #8 Mystery Fun House in particular. I remember borrowing it and playing it, although it was only a few years ago that I realized it was "mainstream" for its time. It was a tough one, we were relatively young at the time and had no online help so we never made it that far. It was a different era... not too mention that it was pain to wait 10-12 minutes to wait on it to load from the cassette tape!
arthurdawgnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6264881409789872629.post-26481581249840766422019-01-13T09:55:31.406-05:002019-01-13T09:55:31.406-05:00Good call, SEARCH and SHAKE both work! And there is a clue that mop is worth searching; the dead saboteur has a bit of yarn on his person, though I didn't draw the connection until after beating the game. That's on me, though, and I can't blame Adams for not giving me enough info to solve that particular puzzle.

I still haven't got any rationale for why I should have thought kicking the metal door would help.Ahabhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/04131989140638867919noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6264881409789872629.post-19035523065807665352019-01-10T13:03:37.796-05:002019-01-10T13:03:37.796-05:00Does anything else work on the mop? I wonder if shaking it, searching it, or spinning it would have worked. kicking a metal door seems like it'd hurt more than help. The only time I'd try that is out of frustration. I remember seeing a few of Scott Adams' games around the house, but by the time I was interested in checking them out the computers we had to run them were not working.Zenic Reveriehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/16441583549326102945noreply@blogger.com
